* Volunteer of the Year *
Dedicated... Dependable... Irrepressible... Fun... Creative...
All are words that seem to sneak into any conversation involving BJ and Bob Knapp. The couple has
been deeply involved in theatre both in Summit County and in south Florida.
You probably remember BJ as the sassy Clairee in "Steel Magnolias". But her artistic talent has
also been on display in many past and current Backstage productions - "The Hobbit", "Crazy Bag",
"The Housekeeper", "Reefer Madness", "Easy Living", and "The Wizard of Oz" - in designing and
painting sets, or in creating props to complement the shows.
Bob is a constant presence in bringing structural life to BJ's creations: hauling materials;
putting his carpentry skills to work; or just making sure the stage right flat is not
95⅞" tall, not 96⅛" tall, but precisely 96" tall!
Married 50 years this November 7, 2008, they've parented four children and grandparented seven!
Bob retired as chief pilot and Senior Director of Flight Operations for a major US airline, while
BJ - well, she never really retired, since this is the second consecutive year she has been
recognized as Backstage Theatre's "Volunteer of the Year."
Both bring their commitment and wonderful senses of humor to the efforts of the Backstage. While theatre
remains a central passion for both, somehow they find time to ski, sail, hike, golf, cheer for Bob's
beloved Red Sox and Patriots, and travel extensively.
Donating much of their time, energy, and resources, they are more than worthy recipients for this honor.
Thank you BJ and Bob for being a part of the theatre and giving so unselfishly in all you do.
You two are simply the best!
